How to Become a Cosmetologist in Maryland
Although Maryland is a relatively small state, it is booming with urban culture and innovation. From The Walters Art Museum to Fort McHenry National Monument, the city offers a plethora of activities. Watching the Baltimore Orioles and other sports teams have always been a favorite pastime of the locals. As residents and tourists alike visit the city, they want to look their best. You can become a well-known cosmetologist after earning your license, and make a decent living!
In order to earn your cosmetology license in Maryland, you first have to attend an accredited beauty school and complete 1,500 hours of training. If you wish, you also have the option to complete a 24-month apprenticeship instead. Either way, you will learn about nail care, hair styles, makeup applications, skin treatments, salon management, and more. After your training is complete, you have to pass a written exam on behalf of the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology. Every two years, you are required to renew your license for a small fee. Although no continuing education is necessary for renewal, you may wish to further your knowledge of trends and techniques as the year’s progress.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a licensed cosmetologist can earn $29,350 on average not including tips. Maryland is the third highest paying state in the United States for careers in cosmetology.
