How to Become a Cosmetologist in Michigan

Michigan is home of the Great Lakes. The water surrounds the majority of the state from around the Thumb to as north as Mackinaw City; there are miles and miles of beautiful shores. With four gorgeous seasons, the outdoor areas are not just popular in the summer. The winter boasts of skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. If you are not a fan of nature, you can visit major metropolitan areas like Detroit for casinos, zoos, museums, and other nightlife activities.

Detroit and its surrounding cities are full of innovative culture. It is an ideal place to learn cosmetology. The schools offer fundamental skills from nail, makeup, and hair care to more specialized classes like waxing and weaving. In order to obtain your cosmetology license, you must complete 1,500 hours of instruction, coursework, and exams at a licensed school. Apprenticeship hours do not count toward these 1,500 hours. However, most students can complete this requirement within 9-15 months. Afterwards, you must pass the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology examination.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for cosmetologist professionals is $24,090 in Michigan. After you earn your license, you can work wherever you desire. This may include a chain store, an independent beauty shop, or you very own salon.
