In order to become a professional cosmetologist, you have to complete 1,500 hours of training from an accredited program. During this time, you will undergo textbook course, in-class practice, and hands-on experience. Afterward, you must pass a state board exam to earn your license. If you already have your license and want to pursue your career even further, you can become a cosmetology instructor. You have to earn 12 college semester hours. If you have less than two years of experience as a licensed cosmetologists, you will be required to complete an additional 2,000 hours of training; if you have more than two years of experience, you will only need another 750 hours of training.
