If you want to be in the mix with the musicians, actors, and other socialites of the state, you should consider a career in cosmetology. Imagine being a makeup artist on a movie set or a hair stylist for a fashion show! You can make this dream a reality when you become a professional cosmetologist.

First, you have to enroll in a beauty school and complete 1,000 hours of training. Your coursework and hands-on practice will include hair, nail, and skin care. Next, you must pass an exam on behalf of the New York State Board of Cosmetology to achieve your license. According to the New York Division of Licensing Services, there are several types of beauty specialists including cosmetologists, hair stylists, nail technicians, waxers, massage therapists, barbers, and instructors. After you earn your license, you must renew it every four years for a small fee.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, licensed cosmetologists earn an average of $27,600 per year not including tips. There are over 25,000 professionals within the state. Whether you want to work in a salon, spa, resort, or even for yourself, you can rub elbows with your favorite actors, singers, and entertainers by becoming a cosmetologist.
