Within a year, you can become a professional hair stylist, makeup artist, nail technician, or skin care specialist. After enrolling in an accredited beauty school, you must complete 1,800 hours of training. This will include both coursework and hands-on practice. An apprenticeship of 4,000 is also acceptable opposed to beauty school training. Next, you have to pass a board exam on behalf of the Wisconsin Barbering and Cosmetology Examining Board. To become a cosmetology instructor, you must have your cosmetology license along with an additional 150 hours of training and another 2,000 hours of work experience.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average cosmetologist earns about $10 an hour. However, this does not include tips.
